Experience the world together! The Africa Museum is a museum about world cultures. It lets you explore the most finest treasures and stories from around the world. We offer an extensive range of activities for primary and secondary school children. All prices include museum entrance.

PRIMARY

Body percussion

Workshop

Have you seen the museum’s ‘power figures’ ? They are full of nails, beads, shells, feathers and even padlocks to ward off evil and protect people. Did you know that your own body can also be a power figure? Clapping, stamping your feet, singing and banging things gives your body power, and lets you make your own music at the same time without the need for drums or any other instruments. Together, we’ll make some powerful music to summon up lots of energy.

  • Age group: 4-12
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Price: € 90,- per 100 pupils

African stories

Performance

Come and watch, listen and join in. African storytellers don’t sit with a book in their lap, they sing, dance, impersonate and make music. A storyteller never tells a story alone, so he will soon have you singing, dancing and playing along!

  • Age group: 4-12
  • Duration: 30-45 minutes
  • Price: € 200,- per 60 pupils

Painting like Picasso

Guided tour and workshop

Follow in the footsteps of Picasso! Let yourself be inspired by African figures and masks, just like the world-famous artist. Join a museum teacher to study some objects in the museum, then make a sketch of your favourite object and turn it into a painting, just like a real artist.

  • Age group: 8-12
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Price: € 70,- per 15 pupils (several groups can be accommodated simultaneously)

Voortgezet onderwijs in het Tropenmuseum - educatieTravelling religions

Guided tour and workshop

Did you know that religions travel the world? At this workshop, pupils encounter gods that have travelled from Africa to Haiti. These gods are well-disposed to humans, but you have to know how to approach them. They like to be charmed by their favourite colours and materials, for example. The children have the opportunity to make an art object for the god of their choice, to charm him or her with the right colours, materials and shapes. Who knows, maybe their wishes will come true?

  • Age group: 10-12
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Price: € 70,- per 15 pupils (several groups can be accommodated simultaneously)

Voortgezet onderwijs in het Afrika MuseumFrom piercing to lipdisc's

Guided tour

Africans decorate their bodies in many different ways. This tour explores temporary adornments like artistic hairstyles and colourful clothing, and more permanent decoration like scarification and lip discs. Where do these traditions come from? Who decides what is attractive? Are there perhaps more similarities between Africa and Europe than we might at first think?

  • Age group: 12-18
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Price: € 45,- per 15 students (several groups can be accommodated simultaneously)

Onderwijs in het Afrika MuseumFaith in the world

Guided tour

Discovery Vodun, Islam and Christianity. Lots of objects in the Africa Museum are associated with religion or belief. A figure of an ancestor, a hunting tunic, an installation made of little etchings: they are all related to people’s beliefs. People express, celebrate or pass on their beliefs in all kinds of ways. This tour highlights differences and similarities.

  • Age group: 12-18
  • Duration: 45 minutes
